13 Co-Workers Splits $250,000

Sherry Morales of Richmond was at work when her husband called with an unusual question.

“What’s up with this Lottery ticket?” he asked.

The ticket was purchased as part of an office pool Sherry organized with a dozen of her co-workers at Suntrust Mortgage in Richmond. It turns out that the ticket matched the first five winning numbers in the April 21 Mega Millions drawing to win $250,000.

What happened next may well have put an end to any serious work. Sherry put her husband on speakerphone so her disbelieving co-workers could hear that the ticket was a winner. “It was just a big ruckus!” she later said.

She bought the ticket at Spencers Express, located at 5144 Centralia Road in Richmond. The winning numbers for that drawing were 5-24-37-47-52 and the Mega Ball number was 6.

Since the prize was divided 13 ways, each member of the pool received $19,230. Along with Ms. Morales, the pool members are: Sherita Grooms of Richmond, Yashica Dennis of Richmond, Jane Dandridge of Goochland, Tanyanika Gould of Farmville, Joann Tignor of Beaverdam, Amy Setchel of Petersburg, Bonita Flanagan of Richmond, Rebecca Doucet of Richmond, Patricia Lombard of Chesterfield, Joan Burnette of Richmond, Prema Shetty of Glen Allen and Edwin Whittington of Richmond. Each group member contributed $5 as part of the pool.
